I served in the RAF during the cold war as an Aircraft fitter. Never forget these taking off in a QRA scramble - 4 aircraft together roaring into the sky - never to be repeated ever again. Best deterrent the UK had - now the RAF is a mere shadow of what it used to be............😔

Can't believe its almost 10 years since he stopped flying. Still miss the big bird.

I had one fly over us @ 250 feet or less, in the dark up the Whitburn Main Street West Lothian. 3 days later, a UFO investigator flatmate asked me how to get to Whitburn. I asked him if he was investigating the UFO reported in the news papers and he said yes. I told him it was an RAF Vulcan flying up the mains street, because it had its anti collision light flashing and the Delta Wing obscured the sky ! Fantastic.

Good-bye "Spirit of Britain". We loved every second of our co-existence together, early '60's - to this last time - never used as designed*, but entirely successful as such. That is too, the greatest achievement of an aircraft of strategic nuclear war DETERRANCE, job #1; same as my father's main aircraft, B-47, called by some "the most beautiful bomber ever built". Maybe the Stratojet became the archetype of the heavy jet we came to know, but the most beautiful bomber ever built is a tie between the peerless Vulcan and the Convair B-58 Hustler, imho. All 3, all things considered, are miraculous achievements in so many ways IF you realize that it was only less than a lifetime, just a few decades from Kitty Hawk North Carolina and these intercontinental spaceships. There has been nothing like it, before or since comes from adding a completely new dimension to humans in travel - up and down, so to speak. We never grew tired of hearing nor seeing Vulcans and her dashing British crews 24/7/365. From the first time I saw them until now, you make me proud of humanity, up from the slime of prehistory to defying gravity beyond the flightgrace even, of eagles, . . . Thank you Avro, RAF and Great Britain for making and keeping my life better/best you could. Cheers! * Except in the Anglo-Argentinian War of 1981; achieving, as a finale, the longest and successful aerial raid in human history.

Great to see the old girl still working these specials. I went on a Settle - Carlisle line steam excursion pulled by the Duchess, and Lord Nelson (the latter hauled us up from Euston to Carnforth if I remember rightly) way back when I was in the Railway Club at my school - that was around 1979. She got stuck trying to make it up to Shap Summit due to leaves on the line making her wheels slip; we had to wait around 40 minutes for a peak Class 45 to come up behind from Crewe to push us up to the top.
